Best coffee makers without plastic, checked against what makers actually publish

Updated by Isadora Venn. Links to Amazon earn us a commission (how that works).

People searching for the best coffee makers 2026 no plastic usually want one thing: hot water that never sits against plastic. Very few automatic machines get all the way there, and fewer still say so in writing. This page only uses what makers publish about their own materials.

Short answer

Of the best coffee makers without plastic in the hot path, the Ratio Six Series 2 is the most practical: Ratio says that once brewing starts, water only touches stainless steel, borosilicate glass, aluminum and silicone. The tank itself is Tritan, a plastic, so it isn't zero.

For a machine with a plastic-free brew path stated on the listing, the Ratio Eight Series 2 costs far more. For truly no plastic at all, a glass Chemex and a kettle remain the honest answer.

This is a materials question. It isn't a health claim, and the evidence on whether trace contact between hot water and food-grade plastic in a coffee maker matters to anyone's health is not something a coffee maker review can settle. The site doesn't make one, and you should treat any marketing that does with some suspicion.

Ratio publishes a short list of what hot water touches once brewing starts: stainless steel, borosilicate glass, die-cast aluminum and FDA-approved silicone. The water lines are handblown glass tubes you can see from the side. Before brewing, the water sits in a Tritan tank.

The standard filter holder has a BPA-free liner. Ratio's own fix is to pair the Six with the Eight Series 2 stainless dripper and thermal carafe, which it says makes the hot path fully plastic-free.

Brew with this if you want an automatic machine with the clearest material disclosure we found, and a 5-year warranty.

Choose another if even a Tritan tank is too much plastic for you. A manual Chemex has none. See Chemex Classic 8-Cup on Amazon

The Eight Series 2 is Ratio's flagship, and its listing states a plastic-free brew path through stainless steel and glass. The carafe is handblown borosilicate glass, and there's solid hardwood on the body.

It costs nearly double the Six. You're paying for the materials and for the look on the counter more than for better coffee.

Brew with this if price is secondary and you want the plastic-free claim right on the listing.

Choose another if the Six plus Ratio's stainless dripper gets you to the same hot path for less. See Ratio Six Series 2 on Amazon

A Chemex is a glass flask with a wooden collar. No pump, no tank, no heating element. The listing calls it non-porous borosilicate glass that won't absorb odors or chemical residues.

You'll need a kettle, and the kettle is where plastic often sneaks back in. Look for one with a stainless or glass interior.

Brew with this if zero plastic in the brew matters more than pressing a button.

Choose another if you need coffee ready without standing at the counter for four minutes; Ratio's Six does the pouring for you. See Ratio Six Series 2 on Amazon

The Ottomatic is a heated base that pours water over a Chemex for you, set up for hot or iced coffee. The listing's model number reads Ottomatic 2.0, and the set includes a 6-cup Chemex and filters, plus a glass cover and a filter clip. Its spec table lists the water reservoir as clear plastic, so it ranks below the Ratios here: the brew itself happens in glass, but the water starts in a plastic tank.

What it doesn't describe is the water path inside the base. Chemex hasn't published those materials on this listing, so it can't rank above the Ratio here.

Brew with this if you already love Chemex coffee and want it automated.

Choose another if you need written proof of the materials inside. Ratio publishes a list; Chemex's listing doesn't. See Ratio Six Series 2 on Amazon

Chemex Ottomatic 2.0: a short 2026 review

The Chemex Ottomatic 2.0 specs on Amazon are mostly complete. The reservoir holds 40 oz, there's a hot setting and an iced one, and the base stands 13 in tall on a 12.5 by 7.5 in footprint with a 1-year warranty. Its title still says plain "Ottomatic", but the model number field on the listing we checked again on Oct. 28, 2026 reads Ottomatic 2.0, and the bullets describe the 2.0 base. One detail matters for this page: the spec table lists the water reservoir as clear plastic. Cold water sits in it; the listing doesn't say what the heated water passes through on its way to the Chemex.

Is the Chemex Ottomatic 2.0 worth it? For a Chemex owner who brews every day, probably. Among Chemex Ottomatic 2.0 alternatives, the Ratio Six is the closest in price, with a 5-year warranty against this set's one. The Chemex Ottomatic 2.0 price moves often on this set, so the button opens today's listing instead of quoting a number, and any deals show up there.

Cleaning the Chemex Ottomatic 2.0 splits in two. The glass Chemex needs a long soft brush and hot water. The base is the part that scales, and the set ships with a bottle of coffeemaker cleaner, a fair hint that you'll use it; how to descale is in the manual: run its descale cycle, then plain water.

Plastic and related worries

Does hot water touch plastic?

On almost every drip machine, somewhere. The useful question is where: in the cold tank, in the hot lines, or in the basket and carafe.

Ratio Six: Tritan tank; after that, stainless steel, borosilicate glass, aluminum and silicone. Ratio Eight S2 listing: plastic-free brew path (Ratio Coffee, Amazon listing).

Will a hot plate make it taste burnt?

None of these use a hot plate in the usual sense. Ratio sells thermal carafes and says its machines skip the plate on purpose.

Ratio: no hot plate on any model; double-wall stainless thermal carafe on the Six (Ratio Coffee).

How long will it last, and can it be repaired?

Better than most. Ratio backs the Six with five years, among the longest warranties in the category.

Ratio Six: 5-year warranty. Chemex Ottomatic set: 1 year (Amazon listings).

The Moccamaster is in the table for contrast. It's often recommended in no-plastic threads, but its Amazon listing says nothing about materials, so we can't confirm or deny those claims here.

How to judge a no-plastic claim

Ask three questions of any listing. Where does cold water sit? What does hot water run through? What touches the brewed coffee? A machine can honestly say "glass water lines" while the tank and basket are plastic.

BPA-free and Tritan are not the same as plastic-free. They describe a type of plastic. That may be fine for you, but it's a different promise.

Watch for silicone. It's in almost every seal and gasket, including Ratio's. Silicone isn't plastic in the everyday sense, though some readers treat it the same way.

Finally, the carafe. Thermal carafes are stainless inside, while glass carafes are glass. Lids are often plastic either way, and many people forget the lid touches hot coffee every pour.

No-plastic FAQ

What are the best coffee makers without plastic in 2026?

The Ratio Six Series 2 for an automatic machine with a short, published list of materials, the Ratio Eight Series 2 for a plastic-free brew path stated on the listing, and a glass Chemex for no plastic at all.

Is there a coffee maker with no plastic at all?

A manual glass pour-over like the Chemex has none, as long as your kettle cooperates. Automatic machines almost always have plastic or silicone somewhere.

Is Tritan plastic?

Yes. It's a BPA-free copolyester. Ratio uses it for the Six's cold-water tank.

Does the Moccamaster have plastic parts?

Its Amazon listing doesn't describe materials, so this page can't confirm either way. Ask Moccamaster directly before buying on that basis.

Do no-plastic coffee makers taste better?

There's no published evidence that they do. Buy one because you prefer the materials, not for flavor.

Which lower-plastic coffee maker lasts longest?

The Ratio Six carries a 5-year warranty; the Chemex Ottomatic set lists one year.
